Blocked or improperly maintained gas dryer vents can lead to a dangerous buildup of Carbon Monoxide.
Clogged or obstructed dryer vents cannot remove adequate moisture from clothing, releasing it into the home, which can lead to mold and mildew growth.
Birds and other pests can still get in and build a nest.
This bird built this nest with the louvered vent cover in place!
For an additional cost, we can install this vent cover which prevents birds and pests from building a nest.
What was code when the home was built may not be code today. Codes are adjusted over the years to address safety. The good news is that when we clean and inspect your dryer vent, we evaluate the airflow and vent layout, and identify any concerns. We discuss those concerns with you. and we will make recommendations, as necessary.
Here are some of the most common code violations we see in our customer's homes:
Termination means where the dryer vent exits the home.
In homes with a termination on the roof, often when a home has been re-roofed, the vent cover installed is not code, or the termination is not secured properly, causing the dryer vent termination to no longer be venting outside the home.
Homes with termination on the side of the home often have vent covers meant to keep animals or rodents out, but a screen is not code. Vent covers sold at big-box stores may not be meant for a dryer vent, or may include a screen, which can cause a fire hazard.
Flexible duct work must be less than 8 feet of the total vent length.
The connections are often not made properly or the duct is not properly secured, causing the joints to come apart. This results in the termination point being at the point of separation.
PVC is not rated for dryer venting, and cannot be used as a vent.
Dryer vents cannot exceed 35 feet. Because of the change in direction, each 90 degree bend constitutes 5 feet of vent pipe, and each 45 degree bend constitutes 2.5 feet of vent pipe. Elbows must be taken into account when calculating the total length of the vent. Vents exceeding 35 feet in total length require a booster fan to increase air flow.
Whether you are a builder or building your own home, it is best to have an expert do the work. We understand the building codes and requirements for proper dryer venting, and can identify the most efficient layout for your vent.
Older homes often need vents replaced after years of use. Unfortunately, sometimes the vent was not built to meet code requirements. Codes have also changed over the years, so what was code when your home was built may not be code today.
Not only is it not code, but much like a fence catches a ball, a screen on a dryer vent catches lint, causing it to build up, creating a fire hazard. We offer replacement vent covers which meet code, and prevent animals from accessing the opening.
NOTE: The cost of dryer vent covers, transition pipe, build and rebuild is not included in the flat rate cost for cleaning and inspection.
